Cyber security

Cyber security that fits the size of your business

We protect small and medium sized businesses with sensible layers of security: protected devices, safer email, strong sign ins, regular updates, reliable backups and staff who know what to look out for.

At a glance

  • Layered protection, not a single product
  • Endpoint, email and identity security
  • Backups and staff training included in the plan
  • Help preparing for Cyber Essentials

Endpoint protection

Business grade protection on every laptop, desktop and server, with detection and response tools that spot suspicious behaviour, not just known viruses.

Email security

Filtering that stops phishing, malware and spam before it reaches inboxes, with link checking and protection against misdirected email.

Multi factor authentication

A second check when people sign in, so a stolen password alone is not enough to get into your Microsoft 365 or other systems.

Patching and updates

Windows, Microsoft 365 and common applications kept up to date, closing the security holes that attackers look for first.

Backups that work

Encrypted backups of your files, email and servers, tested regularly, so you can recover if the worst happens.

Staff awareness

Short training and simulated phishing emails that help your team recognise scams and feel confident reporting them.

Cyber security

Security that does not get in the way

Small businesses are not too small to be targeted. Most attacks are not aimed at anyone in particular: they are automated scams and stolen password attempts sent to thousands of businesses at once, looking for whoever has left a door open.

The good news is that a handful of well chosen measures stop the large majority of these attacks. We put those measures in place, look after them every day and explain what we are doing in plain English, without scare stories.

Security is built into every managed IT support plan we offer, and we can also help businesses that just need a security review or a specific service.

How it works

From first conversation to fully looked after

Review

We look at your devices, accounts, email, backups and network, and identify the gaps that matter most.

Prioritise

You get a plain English list of recommendations, starting with the quick wins that reduce the most risk for the least cost.

Protect

We put the agreed protections in place, test them and make sure your team knows about any changes to how they sign in or work.

Maintain

Security is not a one off job. We monitor, update and review your protection so it keeps up with new threats.

Why layered security works

No single product will keep a business safe. Antivirus does not stop someone logging in with a stolen password. Multi factor authentication does not stop a member of staff paying a fake invoice. A backup does not stop data being stolen. Each measure covers a different gap, and attackers only need one gap to get in.

That is why we take a layered approach. We put several sensible protections in place so that if one is bypassed, another is there to catch the problem. None of the layers on their own are complicated, but together they make your business a much harder target than the average.

The layers we put in place

Protecting your devices

Every laptop, desktop and server needs business grade protection. We use VIPRE endpoint security, which combines traditional malware protection with endpoint detection and response (EDR). EDR watches for suspicious behaviour, such as a program suddenly encrypting lots of files, and can stop it in its tracks. For businesses that want round the clock cover, managed detection and response adds a team of security analysts watching for threats. Read more on our endpoint protection page.

Securing email

Email is still the most common way attacks start. Good filtering removes most phishing and malware before it reaches anyone, link protection checks web addresses when they are clicked, and correctly configured SPF, DKIM and DMARC records make it harder for criminals to send email pretending to be you. See our email security page for the detail.

Protecting accounts and sign ins

Stolen passwords are behind a large share of business account compromises. Multi factor authentication (MFA) adds a second check, usually an app on your phone, so a password on its own is not enough. In Microsoft 365 we also review admin accounts, switch off old sign in methods that bypass MFA and, where your licences include it, set up conditional access rules that control where and how people can sign in.

Keeping software up to date

Many successful attacks use security holes that were fixed months earlier but never installed. We manage updates for Windows and common applications on a schedule that suits you, check that they have been applied and deal with any that fail. We also help you replace software and devices that no longer receive security updates.

Backups you can rely on

If ransomware or a mistake does get through, backups are what let you recover. We set up encrypted backups for servers, devices and Microsoft 365, keep copies away from your main systems and test restores regularly. Our backup and recovery page explains how.

Your team

Technology catches most threats, but people are the final layer. Short, regular security awareness training and simulated phishing tests help staff spot the scams that slip through and, just as importantly, feel comfortable reporting a mistake straight away.

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is the UK Government backed scheme that sets out basic technical controls every organisation should have. It is a useful benchmark and is required for some government contracts. We help businesses prepare by finding and fixing the gaps before their assessment. See our Cyber Essentials page for how the scheme works.

Firewalls and your network

A properly configured business firewall controls what can reach your network from the internet and is one of the five controls in Cyber Essentials. We make sure default passwords are changed, admin access is protected, unnecessary rules are removed and firmware is kept up to date. Guest WiFi is kept separate from your business systems. See our networks and WiFi page for more.

If something goes wrong

If you think you have clicked a bad link, entered your password somewhere you should not have, or notice something odd on a computer, call us straight away on 0191 543 3432. Acting quickly makes a real difference. Questions

Cyber security: your questions answered

Are small businesses really targeted by cyber criminals?

Yes. Most attacks are automated and sent to huge numbers of businesses at once, so size offers little protection. Small businesses are often seen as easier targets because they have fewer protections in place.

Is antivirus enough on its own?

No. Antivirus is one important layer, but it will not stop someone signing in with a stolen password or a member of staff being tricked into paying a fake invoice. A layered approach covering devices, email, accounts, updates, backups and training is much stronger.

What is multi factor authentication?

Multi factor authentication, often called MFA, asks for a second check when you sign in, usually a code or prompt on your phone. It means someone who has stolen your password still cannot get into your account without that second factor.

Do you provide cyber security without full IT support?

Yes. Security is built into our managed IT support plans, but we can also provide individual services such as endpoint protection, email security, training or Cyber Essentials preparation for businesses with other IT arrangements.

What should we do if we think we have been hacked?

Call us straight away on 0191 543 3432. Do not turn off affected computers unless we ask you to, and avoid deleting anything. We will help you contain the problem, secure accounts and work out what has happened.

Can you help us get Cyber Essentials?

Yes. We help you prepare by checking your systems against the requirements and fixing any gaps. The certification itself is awarded by an independent certification body licensed by IASME.
